From registration to actual use - step by step
Visit LastPass's website to register; the free plan supports 1 device with unlimited passwords. Premium $3/month, Families $4/month (6 users), Teams $4/user/month. LastPass is one of the oldest password managers; a data breach occurred in 2022.
Go to Sign UpGiven the 2022 data breach, new users should prioritize Bitwarden or 1Password. If choosing LastPass, enable all security options (2FA, PBKDF2 encryption).
Set a master password during registration—at least 16 characters with upper/lower case, numbers, and symbols. In "Account Settings → Security", set PBKDF2 iterations to 600000 (default 100100 is no longer secure); encryption mode AES-256.
In "Advanced Settings", disable "Remember Email" and enable "Log Out When Browser Closed" to prevent others from accessing your vault when using your computer.
Install LastPass Extension in Chrome/Firefox/Edge. On first use, the browser asks whether to save existing passwords—accept all. You can also batch import CSV files from "Advanced Options → Import", supporting migration from Chrome, 1Password, and Bitwarden.
When migrating from Chrome, first export CSV from Chrome Password Manager, then import to LastPass, and finally delete all passwords in Chrome to avoid duplicate storage.
View your security score in "Security Dashboard" to identify weak, reused, and breached passwords. Set up "Emergency Access" to designate trusted contacts who can request vault access when you can't (e.g., in emergencies).
Set a waiting period for Emergency Access (7-30 days recommended), during which you can deny access requests—preventing malicious triggering. Premium users get "Dark Web Monitoring" for email breach alerts.
