From registration to actual use - step by step
Visit Cloudflare's website and sign up with email. Cloudflare offers free CDN, DDoS protection, and DNS resolution; the free plan includes core security features. Pro plan at $20/month adds WAF and image optimization; Business $200/month; Enterprise custom quote.
Go to Sign UpThe Free plan is sufficient for personal websites with enterprise-grade DDoS protection at zero cost. Multiple websites can be managed under one Cloudflare account.
Click "+ Add Site" and enter your domain; Cloudflare auto-scans and imports existing DNS records. After review, Cloudflare provides two Nameservers that you must set at your domain registrar; DNS propagation takes 24-48 hours.
Before migrating DNS, ensure Cloudflare has imported all DNS records correctly (especially MX mail records), or mail services may be interrupted.
Set encryption mode in "SSL/TLS": Off, Flexible, Full, or Full (Strict). Full (Strict) is recommended, requiring SSL on the origin server. Enable managed rule sets in "Security → WAF" (Cloudflare Ruleset) to auto-block SQL injection, XSS, and other attacks.
Flexible mode has man-in-the-middle risk—use only temporarily. Use "Origin Certificate" to generate free origin SSL certificates valid for 15 years.
Create rules in "Security → WAF → Custom Rules": e.g., "block specific countries", "challenge requests with certain User-Agents". Enable "Bot Fight Mode" to auto-challenge suspicious crawlers. Configure "Rate Limiting" to prevent high-frequency requests from single IPs.
Enable "Under Attack Mode" to mitigate DDoS attacks within 5 seconds; all visitors must pass JS Challenge. Remember to turn it off after the attack ends.
