From registration to actual use - step by step
Visit Bitwarden's website to register; the free plan includes unlimited password storage, cross-device sync, and 2FA. Premium at just $10/year unlocks YubiKey support, encrypted file storage, TOTP authenticator, and more. Bitwarden is the highest-rated open-source password manager.
Go to Sign UpThe free plan suffices for personal use; Premium's $10/year mainly supports the open-source project. You can self-host Bitwarden (Vaultwarden) for free with no limits.
Set a Master Password during registration—this is the only key that can decrypt your vault; it must be strong and unforgettable. Use a combination of 4-6 random words (e.g., horse-battery-staple-correct)—easy to remember and strong. Set up email verification and 2FA (Authenticator App recommended).
Master passwords cannot be recovered; write it on paper and store in a safe. Bitwarden provides a "Master Password Hint" feature to help recall.
Install Bitwarden Extension in your browser. Migrate from other password managers: in "Tools → Import", select the source (LastPass, 1Password, Chrome, etc.) and upload the export file. Bitwarden supports importing CSV, JSON, and other formats.
Before migrating from LastPass, export CSV from LastPass and delete the export file to prevent leakage. After importing to Bitwarden, immediately change important account passwords.
Organize passwords with "Folders" and "Collections". Run security reports in "Tools → Vault Health Reports": exposed passwords, weak passwords, reused passwords, insecure websites. Premium users can auto-generate strong passwords and replace weak ones.
Use "Send" to securely share temporary passwords or text with expiry time and access count limits—auto-destroys after sharing, safer than email.
